What in the world does AKC mean and is it important?
AKC stands for The American Kennel Club, which was formed just over 110 years ago in September of 1884. It was formed by a group of twelve representatives from a dog club that had held a dog show or had run field trials.
It was a club of clubs of sorts, and it was the American Kennel Club.
Over the years, the American Kennel Club has revolutionized the dog show by multiple upgrades and clarifications, even a constitution and by laws governing dog shows. They came up with the five groups, which are:
|
Sporting dogs
Working dogs
Terriers
Toy breeds
Non-sporting breeds
|
The winners of each group met at the end of the show and judged together to determine "best in show."
Is it important to you? If you do not know what the acronym meant, probably not. If, however, you are thinking of showing dogs or breeding dogs, it is essential.
