The Beagle: The merry little dog from merry ol' England
The Beagle is the smallest of the British pack-hounds. It was bred for hunting rabbits, it is a sporting dog in the category of Short Legged Scenthound. It is renowned for its "happy" personality.
This breed was very popular with hunters, rich and poor alike, because it was good for hunting on horseback or on foot. This little dog with short legs made it possible for people of considerable age to hurt, because there were few people of any activity who could not keep up with one.
Attempts have been made to miniaturize this already small breed, and "Pocket Beagles" were born. While the tiny version would not retain the popularity that the larger animal enjoyed, they would all but disappear while the bigger breed remained immensely popular as a working dog and cheerful household companion.
