The unlikely origin of the Bichon Frise
It may look like a poodle from Germany, but it is a Bichon Frise from the Canary Islands. Its presence in Africa is explained by the Spanish explorers who brought their lapdogs with them, which bred with the larger dogs that already existed on the islands.
These dogs became popular in Spain among the nobility in Spain from the 16th century to the 19th century. In the late 19th century, they fell out of favor in royal circles and became circus and fairground performers. It stayed obscure until the 1900's when American breeders began to appreciate it.
This dog is confident, playful, lively, fluffy, outgoing, and smart. It needs to have a lot of time devoted to grooming, because its coat requires it. Its coat has been described as "fine, silky, with cork-screw curls."
