The Border Collie has been hard at work in Scotland for centuries. This is the best sheep herding breed in the world. But it's usefulness actually hinders its fame, because the owners were more interested in herding sheep than showing off their dog's special abilities.
The relationship between dog and shepherd is a very special bond between canine and human. The shepherd spends a lot of time with the dog, teaching commands and signals for herding sheep. The dog and the master form a special bond, mainly because of the huge amount of time spent together. It is not uncommon for the shepherd to spend more time working with his dog than he spends with his wife.
The shepherd is more concerned with practicality than anything else and goes through life with a matter-of-fact demeanor. He never bothers to show off his dog. And that is one reason why the dog did not acquire a Kennel Club breed standard until 1976.
