More than just a pet, the Cocker Spaniel is also an accomplished hunter
The Cocker Spaniel originated in England and was used to flush out and retrieve game birds. It has always been friendly and attentive. This is partly why, when it came to America, it was mainly used as a housedog instead of hunter.
In America, the dog began to shrink due to selective breeding. It seems Americans only wanted the small, cute, cuddly ones, therefore only the smallest ones were allowed to propogate. This led to formal recognition of the American version as opposed to the English version of the breed and set the two apart by adding the country prefix to the name.
No matter where you are, you will find fans of both types of this breed. In America there are hunters who are not happy with the change in size because they used the dog as a field worker. Conversely, in England there are those who are perfectly happy with their smaller, fluffy little dog.
