Dog bones are a great reward, as well as a healthy snack for your canine companion

Dog bones used to be just an oversized piece of kibble in the shape of a bone, but these days, they all serve a multitude of different purposes. There are bones that clean teeth, bones that freshen breath, even bones that simulate real bones, right down to the marrow inside to satisfy your dog’s chewing instinct.

Dogs need to have love and affection, but they also need to be dominated, or else they will think they are the dominant creature around the house. Establishing dominance is easy, through a simple punishment/reward system. When the dog exerts an unwanted behavior, punish the dog, by blowing in it’s face or smacking it’s hind quarters with a rolled-up piece of newspaper. The newspaper does not hurt the dog, but the sound startles the dog. If you are uncomfortable doing this, just smack the paper into your palm close to the dog, because the sound alone has a similar affect. When the dog exerts a healthy behavior, or does not exert a bad behavior, give the dog a reward.

Rewards can be anything the dog enjoys, but does not get to do all of the time. It could be a tug of it’s favorite rope, or even just a hug. Dog treats are probably one of the best rewards, given that the dog only receives treats on the special occasion of reward time. Your dog will appreciate you spending time to teach them right verses wrong behavior, and they will learn how to get rewards, thus exerting healthy behavior often.
