Cat and dog costumes can be fun for you and adorable as well, but make sure to keep some pet safety tips in mind this Halloween

Dressing up our pets can make for some really adorable pictures, and it’s understandable to want to include them in on the holiday festivities, but if you do dress them in costumes, make sure to keep some of these safety tips in mind:

Size matters

Make sure you choose a costume that will fit just right. A costume that is too small can make your pet uncomfortable, and this might lead to him or her trying to get out of it, and possibly choking or getting hurt doing so. A costume that is too big probably won’t be so uncomfortable, but it could make for a fumbling mess.

Less is better

Keep it down on the accessories, there are lots of cute one-piece costumes out there to dress Fido or Fifi in that won’t be choking or fire hazards. Try to avoid costumes with excessive parts sticking out – if the animal walks too close to a candle, it could be detrimental.

Reconsider dressing up the cat

Yes, many pet costume companies like to sell costumes for cats, but cats usually don’t like to wear them! They can easily be annoyed by them and work themselves into a frenzy, sometimes causing them to hang themselves.

Halloween can be fun for the whole family, even our pets if safely dressed. Overall, just be sure your pet looks comfortable before going out, and keep a close eye on her or him throughout the night.
