Making sure you get the right dog door the first time around can save you a lot of trouble later on

There are a wide variety of dog doors to choose from out there – but which one is right for you? Well, answering a few simple questions can get you on your way.

What size is best?

And what size will be best in the years to come? Oftentimes, people will purchase their doggie doors immediately after purchasing or adopting their puppy. You want to make sure that you know what kind of dog breed that you’re getting so you can get the right sized dog door. If you’re getting a mixed puppy, it is best to err on the side of caution. Getting a door large enough for your dog when it’s grown will be much easier than taking one out and installing a new one.

How insulated would you like it to be?

If your door goes directly from the outdoors to the indoors, you might want to consider getting a heavily insulated door. Double doors help with insulation, but you might also want to just check the box for good insulation. If the door is going to go between a room and a garage, or one room and another room, this might not be so important to you.

Do you need to ensure that only your dog can come in?

If you have a problem with other animals showing up in your yard, and you want to make sure that your dog and only your dog gets in, an infrared locked doggie door might be best for you. Often, with these doors, the dog wears a ‘key’ around its collar, which activates these doors.

These are a few more important factors when considering which door is best for you and your pet, and getting the right one can lead to your pup’s comfort, energy savings, and less hassle down the line.
