Things to consider before getting a dog

A dog is a huge responsibility. Although, acquiring man's best friend can be overwhelming if you have not properly planned your pet.

One thing to consider is shelter. Your pet needs shelter from rain, sun, and cold weather. There are hundreds of houses for dogs available on the internet, from plastic igloo style to authentic log cabin replicas complete with front porches. They all provide adequate shelter from the elements, but which one you change depends on how much you want to spend on your best friend.

Another thing to consider is entertainment. Yes, entertainment. You can not be with your pet at all times, and without chew toys, squeaky toys, or stuffed animals, he or she could get bored and chew up your base boards, siding, and everything else of value around your home. Worst case is they could get depressed and lick their paws until they bleed. So, entertainment is very important in your dog's life.

The most important expense is by far the biggest and most important to your pet - veterinary care. A lot of times, when someone is giving away dogs or selling them, the person receiving the new pet never asks about shots, worms, fleas, or vaccinations. The new owner should always get their pet a generic check-up "just to make sure."

Consider these things before taking in your new pet. And you will have a rewarding and long lasting relationship.
