Could the German Shepherd be the most intelligent sheep dog?
The German Shepherd is the result of careful breeding in Germany in the late nineteenth century. That was when sheep herders got together and crossed existing breeds of sheep-herding dogs. The dogs were from Central and Northern Germany.
These dogs have proven to be a very patient and smart breed. It shows in the numerous jobs in which this dog is the preferred breed to carry out the task. It may no longer be the preferred sheep dog, but it is for jobs such as guard dog, police dog, and many many others.
The first dogs of this breed had longer legs and a straight back. In recent years the dog has become very popular in the show ring, and breeders have bred the dog to have a shorter body and finer bones. It is displayed in the ring with rear legs slightly bent as if ready for action. Some have said this gives the appearance of urination, and claims it causes damage and results in "bad hips" later in life.
