The Great Dane has been called the national dog of Germany as well as the Apollo of dogs
The Great Dane is actually a breed from Germany, it is not Danish at all. It is also known as the German Mastiff. Today the breed is used, mostly, as a guard dog, but in ancient times this large breed was used as a war dog, boar hunter, and fighting dog.
The earlier incarnation of this breed were heavier, more ferocious dogs. These were prized in the middle-ages on the hunting field as high status. On a boar hunt a Duke from Germany once brought 600 to hunt with.
In the 19th century, the breed became less ferocious and more like the docile giant we know today. A dog of this breed holds the record for world's tallest dog. This breed, on average, is actually not the tallest breed, its height is a bit less than the Irish wolfhound.
