The Maltese, the ultimate luxury dog
The Maltese has a long, pure white coat and was once known as "the jewels of women" because the owners would wear them on their bodies. The breed also features dark, black rimmed eyes and a curled up tail.
In ancient times, ladies of high social standing owned these tiny pet dogs, which they loved, groomed, allowed the dogs to share their bed, and even fed delicacies. These animals were highly valued, and were traded before the time of Christ.
This dog is surprisingly tough, despite its dainty appearance. In earlier paintings a variety of coat patterns were depicted. But solid white was the favorite. Since veryone wanted a white one, the process of selective breeding had begun and today white is the only color of this dog accepted as pure.
