What is pedigree and why is it important?
What is a pedigree?
It is a dog’s family tree, listing the registered names of the dog’s parents, grandparents, and so on, usually up to four or five generations. Other information is often available as well, such as date of birth and titles given.
Why it’s important for breeding
It is vital to know the dogs’ pedigree when breeding, mainly for two reasons: health and temperament. Knowing what ailments a dog’s ancestors had is an important factor in breeding, for obvious reasons. The same goes with temperament – especially if you’re thinking about entering future dogs into dog shows.
Choosing a pedigree
The wonderful thing about these records is that you can often match up a dog’s personality with your own. This can be very important since dogs become an integral part of our families for many years. So have a look at the different breeds, their personality types, as well as their health records, to see what’s in store for you for years to come.
Keep records
Remember: the more information on a dog, the better – for you and for future owners. So make sure you document color, behavior, health, etc. And if you want to be a very keen breeder/owner, there’s some nice pedigree software available to help you keep as much information as possible.
