Of all breeds, Pugs are quite possible the most mysterious

Virtually nothing is known about how Pugs came to be. Everything from its name, origins to its ancestry, cannot be accurately traced back to a definite point. I will briefly explain the mystery of this little short-haired, curly-tailed, flat-faced dog with thick skin.

First, I will talk about some suggestions as to where it got its name. In ancient times there were fighting dogs called "Pugnales," it has been said that the Pug is a dwarf version of this dog. Historically, Pug has meant hobgoblin, Puck, or imp; implicating this dog was viewed as a goblin-like creature or dwarf animal.

As for the breed's ancestry, it has been theorized that it is a long-legged ancestor of the Pekingese. Some call it a Dwarf Mastiff. Still others have called it a "Miniature Bulldog," but a comparison of skulls has ruled this out.

Lastly, I am going to talk about some proposals on the breed's origins. Although it hails from China, it has been put forth that this breed originally came from Holland, Russia, Rome, and even Egypt. The dog most likely came from China and made its way along trade routes, becoming popular with the wealthy who collected exotic animals thus cementing their status worldwide as a cherished lap-dog.
