When you see a sign that reads "puppies for sale," it's buyer beware
There are ads in the paper and signs beside the the road everywhere that advertise puppies for sale. But just how legitimate are they? When getting a puppy, people are often so excited they forget to ask the important questions such as, "Has the puppy had its shots?" or "Is there a history of illness or disease in this breed?" But when spending hundreds of dollars on a pet, these questions are essential.
A reputable breeder or retailer should be able to supply accurate records of vaccinations, sterilizations, and birth date for age and scheduling of visits to the veterinarian. If the person supplying the pet cannot give you this information, you should look for a pet elsewhere.
Animal shelters are excellent sources of loving pets, they provide up to date health records, vaccination schedules, sterilization, and in most cases, the accurate age of the animal. You get all of this for the cost of shots and sterilization.
