Don't let your dogs get a leg up on you, start training them when they are puppies

Most established dog trainers will tell you that puppies are life sponges, ready and willing to soak up all the information in their surroundings. It is never too early to start training your puppy. You should begin training as soon as you take possession of your puppy.

There are a number of methods used to train dogs, almost as many methods as there are breeds of dogs. But not all of the methods are the same at their core. Most all methods are based on a punishment/reward system. Good behaviour is rewarded, and bad behaviour is punished.

Most rewards are the same, sing-song words of affirmation. A pat on the head, a scratch on the back, and some sort of food treat. The real difference in a training method is the method of punishment. Punishments range from a quick spray of water to a smack on the behind to blowing a puff of air on their nose.

Pet punishment has become a cottage industry, think about it, more effective "training aids" are for punishment. Shock collars, choke chains, and the other training aids are very effective to control barking, chewing, scratching, and jumping. These methods are both effective and humane.

Begin training as soon as possible, because a well behaved puppy grows up to be a well behaved dog.
