Teddy Roosevelt: Favorite dog, the Rat Terrier
The American Rat Terrier was bred to kill rodents, rats, mostly. But it was employed for squirrel, rabbit, and anything up to its size control. This dog was bred to be the ultimate rat-killer.
Theodore Roosevelt used Rat Terriers to hunt down and kill rats in the White House. He was even the person that gave them that moniker. When the rest of America heard the president used these dogs as rat contro;, the demand for them went up.
Today this dog is mainly a house dog, but it is still a very competent hunting dog. Its incessant barking was actually a good thing in the early 20th century. It was how this fearless dog would trap its catch, it would often run up a tree, then the dog would often circle the tree barking loudly. This dog has a cold nose, good eye, and good ear. Overall, it is a good dog.
