The butcher's dog from Rottweil, or Rottweiler, has come a long way
From the title of Rottweiler Metzerhund, which translates, literally, as "butcher's dog from Rottweil" to revered guard dog around the world. This dog has had a long and honorable history. Today this once junkyard dog enjoys prominent show dog status.
Descended from anciant Roman cattle-driving dogs, which stayed behind after the Romans spread across Europe, and crossed with local German Sheep Dogs. The result was a perfect cattle-driving/guard dog for the butchers and cattle dealers of Rottweil.
This dog is extremely loyal, travelers used to tie their money bags around the dog's neck in hostile territory. Because it was said that the dog's neck was safer than a bank vault.
In recent times, there have been calls to have this dog banned, because of injuring strangers and some children, severely. Banning this beautiful dog would be very unfortunate, because in all cases of attack, it was found that the dog was being tormented or was not properly trained, a whole breed of dog driven from existence because of careless owners.
