The fearless, tenacious, bossy Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire Terrier or "Yorkie," as it is nicknamed, is the product of careful, complex breeding to produce the perfect rat killer. It was employed in Yorkshire mines and cotton mills.
While no one knows for certain how many or even what breeds were used to create this breed, all of the following have been mentioned: the long haired Leeds Terrier, the Black and Tan Terrier, the Clydesdale Terrier, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier, the Manchester Terrier, and the Maltese. From this mixture came the fearless Rat Killing Yorkie.
A distinguishing characteristic of this breed is its unusually long hair. The reason behind the long hair is most interesting. The breeders were using selective breeding to produce a rat killing dog that miners could fit into their pocket until needed, and while the dog was successfully "shrunk," the hair itself stayed the same length. Other than the abnormally long hair, the breeders of Yorkshire can pat themselves on the back, because they accomplished exactly what they had intended to do.
